Cottages in Mombasa Review

Malindi and Mombasa are Kenya’s top beach destinations that both share the Indian Ocean waters though they are 120km apart. Malindi is north east of mainland Mombasa. Both places have cottages that offer lowly priced accommodation alternatives to pricier beach resorts there.

In this article, we are going to review some of the cottages in Mombasa and Malindi as you plan your holiday to Mombasa.

 

1. Msafiri Cottages

Family run Msafiri Cottages in Mombasa are 5 minutes walk to the Indian Ocean Beach. They are suited for backpackers, friends, or school groups. They offer a tranquil alternative away from the chaos of noisy resorts.

They are hygienic and secure enough for guests to enjoy their beach adventure carefree. Costs are also fairly priced to cater for guests on tight budget. Day trips are offered to places like Fort Jesus, Gedi Ruins and Watamu and Mombasa Marine Parks.

2. Hibiscus Gardens

Hibiscus Gardens in Malindi Town is 300m from Kilili Baharini Beach. It has a pair of thatched cottages, gazebos, tropical gardens and circular pool all designed to Swahili theme. The cottages have a study and various places for unwinding like hammocks or hung swinging chairs. Guests can opt to cook for themselves although the owner Uta Goodwin can avail her employees to cook mouth watering Swahili cuisine if needed.

The rates for renting decrease per guest, the more they are booked.

3.Dorado Beach Cottages

Still in Malindi are Dorado Beach Cottages on Marine Park Road in Casuarina area. The cottages are in a tropical deluxe garden and have 22 spacious villas. There are two swimming pools as well as a restaurant. The cottages are under Italian Management and the cuisine is heavily Italian.

They face the Indian Ocean waters that wash up to the sandy white beach. From the cottages’ restaurant guests dine as they watch the Ocean Waters. The management also offers holiday packages to Kenya’s famed game parks.

4. Shimoni Gardens Resort

Located 80kms from Mombasa town are the 16 roomed Shimoni Gardens Resort. The resort offers some of the most affordable cottage accommodation available in Mombasa. The gardens are, in the heart of the virgin jungle of Shimoni. From there magnificent Wasini Island Mangrove Forest is visible.

Shimoni has caves that were used years ago to imprison thousands of slaves on transit to infamous Zanzibar slave market on their way to Arabia. The caves today are tourists’ site. Tourists can go on dhow or cultural trips, beach walks, swimming with dolphins, snorkel or visit the Wasini coral gardens.

5. Maweni and Capricho Beach Cottages

Maweni and Capricho Beach Cottages are located on the South Coast, 20km from Mombasa town, on virgin secluded Tiwi Beach. There are 36 cottages and 30 hotel suites. Cottages range from 1 to 4 bed roomed units fully furnished.

Capricio cottages are elevated to offer clear views of the ocean and beach as a sea breeze blows in.

You can sunbathe, dive, fish, or go on tours to Shimoni, or Kisite Marine Park. Trips to Shimba Hills Game Reserve or Mwalungoje Elephant Sanctuary can be facilitated too.
