Nabq Park borders the city to the north and brims with over 134 plant species and has vibrant mangrove plantation. Sharm el Sheikh also has rich historical heritage and culture. The indigenous Bedouin tribe draws hordes of tourists to their artistic antiques and handicrafts. The century old but functional St Catherine Monastery depicts origins of Orthodox Christianity in Egypt. Its architecture wall, paintings and historical documents and manuscripts bear testament. To date Greek Orthodox monks still retreat here for their services. The monastery is overlooked by the 2641 meters Mount St Catherine the highest peak in Egypt. Another peak 2285 meters Mount Moses, widely believed to be where Prophet Moses received the 10 commandments. It’s frequented by Muslims, Jews and Christian pilgrims.
From the Sharm el Sheikh, horse rides, golf excursions and desert safaris can be organized for tourists interested in venturing further out.
